In honor of Iowa's recent legislation, I recorded an instrumental version of Greg Brown's Iowa Waltz. This is my first foray into multi-track recording, so it's sloppy and a little off beat. But I suppose you've got to start somewhere.
My band (the Ex-Lovers) is playing a show at the Bedlam tomorrow night (Wednesday). We're playing the Kitty Cat Klub on both the 22nd and the 26th this month. The 22nd is with Milk;Honey and the 26th is with Huck Brock, who is awesome.

New Shows, etc.
I just wrote and recorded a song that i really like, but i don't really feel like posting it. It's kind of anarcho-primitivist-y, and i'm feeling bashful. E-mail me if you want me to send it to you.
I've been thinking about Wendell Berry and John Zerzan a lot lately. They're opposites in some ways, but also the same. It's been awhile since i've read Wendell Berry-- I wish I had more time to read and reread.
We have a show this Friday (a week from today) at Arise. We may play a house show on the 21st (still figuring that one out). The Arise show is a benefit for a friend-of-a-friend. For more information, check out: http://supportdustin.wordpress.com/

Above's a flyer for the event. A friend of the band "Ode to the Roddies" made it, and I think it's real classy. I wish I could draw like that.
And below is two pictures Eileen's brother, Brendan, took of a show we played a couple of months ago that i forgot to post. Brendan takes the best pictures:

banjo song
Here's a new song. It's another rough draft of a song, really. It's called "Zerzan's Gospel."
A neighborhood paper featured us in a video for the art shanties:

Utah Phillips and Ice Show
It's been awhile. My camera broke and I lent my microphone to a friend. So here's two songs by Utah Phillips:
We've Fed You All for a Thousand Years (not actually written by Utah Phillips, but that's where I first heard it from)
Rocks, Salt, and Nails
Utah Phillips was a singer/activist. He died last year. He was a Wobbly who ran for president promising to "do nothing". He told lots of stories about railroads and workers and people and such. My two favorite quotes of his:
"The state can't give you freedom, and the state can't take it away. Freedom is something you're born with, and then one day someone tries to deny it. The extent to which you resist is the extent to which you are free."
and
"The earth is not dying, it is being killed, and those who are killing it have names and addresses."
Here's a video of our last show, at the Art Shanty Project on Medicine Lake:

The Ex-Lovers are playing Arise Bookstore on the 20th of this month (Feb.), and I'm playing with some friends at the Jug Band Contest at the Cabooze this Sunday (the 8th of Feb).

neon fires
so, here's a new song:
also, we have new songs from our last show up on the ex-lovers myspace (www.myspace.com/theexloversus). I've mostly written new songs with the band, but i'll put stuff up on here that i don't do with them.
We have three shows coming up.
Nov. 29th is a fundraiser for E's sister's school. Problem is, J's getting his wisdom teeth removed the day before, so it might not be a full ex-lovers show. Not sure what's going to come of it yet.
December 11th is the Hexagon Bar, with Ropetrick and Bitch N Brown.
December 21st is Big V's with t.b.a.
So come on down.

Build us high

I just wrote this. It's in 5/4 on clawhammer banjo.
Here's hoping everyone had a great Halloween! If you don't have any plans tomorrow, you should come out to see us play at Big V's. Music starts at 10pm, we'll probably come on around 10:45-11ish. The other bands are great.
